What can you grow on your windowsill

In winter, I really want fresh greens and vegetables.. In stores, we are usually offered watery tomatoes and cucumbers that do not smell. And where to get the vitamins? There is an exit! Today I want to talk about how to grow your own vegetable garden on the windowsill!

Why do you need it

For those who have begun to doubt, I will argue in favor of home-grown vegetables:

  1. Perfect for practical people. Instead of a regular geranium, you can put a pot of parsley and store nutrients all year round.
  2. Saving! It is much cheaper to buy seeds than to buy greens in a supermarket, even if they announced huge discounts.
  3. Aesthetics. I can not get around this point, since the green color has long been considered a great sedative, and it is so lacking in modern cities.
  4. Hobby, which benefits all households.
  5. Visual aids for botany for children: You can combine business with pleasure and hold small educational sessions at home.
  6. Always fresh vitamins for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

For resourceful people who do not have country plots, the window sill and balcony become a full-fledged analogue of a vegetable garden.

How to prepare a window sill

Of course, at the start you will need attachments. They are proportional to the grandeur of the plan, but I advise you to start small, and then - at will.

Standard set:

  • soil, it is better to buy in a specialty store;
  • drainage;
  • pots or containers, always with holes to drain excess water;
  • fluorescent lamps for short daylight compensation.

Plant growth is activated even by LED lamps of special shades, they are now freely sold in stores and on the Internet.

What can be grown

Now we proceed to the most interesting part.! I collected the most popular plants for growing on the windowsill.

Greenery: parsley, dill, celery, mint, lemon balm, sorrel, lettuce, basil and others. They do not require special care, they can be planted in flat flower pots.

Celery and parsley grow well from the rhizome, so they are not pulled, but cut, leaving cuttings.

Green onions. It is grown in water or land, it is one of the most unpretentious plants for breeding at home.

Cucumbers. It is important to pay attention to the variety. There will not be a house of bees for pollination; therefore, we must choose a self-pollinating hybrid, preferably early maturation. It will be perfect if you choose a bush cucumber. It is important to remember that they love light, warmth and watering.

Tomatoes We also choose self-pollinated, early varieties of hybrids! I can advise dwarf cherry tomatoes, due to the small size they have time to ripen on the vine. Almost all tomatoes prefer rare, but abundant watering, light, are not afraid of drafts.

Some manufacturers even make a mark about the possibility of growing vegetables from their seeds on the windowsill, so be sure to read the description on the bag.

Bulgarian pepper. It will require patience, since the crop after germinating the seed will be only after 5-6 months. For a home garden, experts advise choosing universal varieties of self-pollinated hybrids. You can look at the early and mid-early varieties of pepper. This southern plant prefers a lot of sun, does not tolerate drafts and responds very well to loosening the soil.

Beans. The plant pollinates itself, gives the pods within 2 months after planting, is very unpretentious, so the beans are so popular among novice gardeners. If possible, choose climbing varieties, they will beautifully decorate the trellis and give the room the look of a winter garden. Alternatively, there are bush beans.

Get your own harvest in a city apartment? Easy! All you need is desire. Some particularly advanced gardeners even grow carrots!
