Who and why came up with a peephole

We have got used to some things and have ceased to notice, for example, a peephole.

Who is the "dad" of the peephole

What is it in a few words? This hole in the door leaf to track the situation outside the house, it allows you to choose who opens the door and who does not. The main role of the door eye is personal security and protection from criminals.

Since childhood, we all have been taught to let in only our acquaintances, carefully looking into the peephole!

The first references to prototypes can be found in the grim descriptions of prisons dating from past centuries.Previously, in the door of the chamber, they made small holes, covered with a metal lid or a grill, to observe the "wards" prisoners. So you could safely track the behavior of prisoners and prevent trouble in time. Based on this fact, I can assume that Invented the peephole, or the prison governor, or someone from the wardens, the name of the inventor has not reached our time, leaving room for imagination.

Of the more modern prototypes, we can cite as an example a mailbox from the times of the USSR, which was located on the inside of the entrance door.Postmen lowered the letters in a narrow slot with a hinged lid, behind which was a box, so that nothing could be seen! But it happened that there was no drawer behind the slot, the correspondence fell right on the floor - and through such an improvised window it was visible who was behind the door. The cap could be pushed outside with a pencil or finger, so attackers could look into the apartment. The name of the author of such boxes history, too, unfortunately, did not save.

There were some more interesting inventions: a magnifying glass filled with water, a mirror, a construction, somewhat reminiscent of binoculars, and other variations. But they all had a significant drawback - a small viewing angle.

American inventor Robert Williams Wood presented to the public a special design of the lens, which we now know under the name "fisheye", she allowed to discreetly see the guest behind the threshold in full growth. The invention was collecting dust on the shelf until the 60s of the 20th century, until manufacturers of lenses for cameras remembered about it, and then the companies for the production of door fittings paid attention to it.

The invention of Wood, among other things, gave impetus to the development of the art of photography.

In which year and why invented the peephole

Modern design has a standard set of parts:

  • eyepiece;
  • housing;
  • lenses;
  • lens;
  • movable flap.

The number of lenses varies from 2 to 15 pieces depending on the thickness of the door leaf and the requirements for image quality.

The economical options are plastic lenses, they quickly lose transparency, but have a good margin of safety in relation to mechanical stress and temperature changes.

The current version, known to us from childhood, gained recognition only in the 1960s, although Robert Wood created it back in 1906.

Now the stores have a wide range of models, differing in shape, size and even in a set of functions! Thanks to Voodoo, one glance is enough for us to determine the identity of a guest standing outside the threshold of our refuge, whereas earlier we had to risk our own safety.
