How to bleed air from the boiler

Operation of water heating systems may be accompanied by air entering the internal cavity of pipes, radiators and a heat source. The occurrence of an air congestion leads to a change in the parameters of the coolant in individual sections or in the entire heating main. Airing the boiler can lead to overheating of the heat exchanger and failure of the heating equipment. Each user of an autonomous heating system must be able to independently get rid of traffic jams that occur inside the water system.

How to bleed air from the boiler

Modern heat sources are equipped with automatic air vents or Maevsky cranes located in the upper part of the unit. This design solution allows you to bleed air during operation, without stopping the process of heating the room in exactly the same way as with any radiator on which such a valve is installed.

To do this, periodically open and close the Mayevsky crane, with an interval of several minutes. The procedure is repeated until a hiss or whistle appears, indicating the exit of the air plug. The appearance of sound requires holding the bleeder in the open position until the coolant.

ATTENTION! The automatic air vent must itself relieve the boiler of plugs during operation of the unit. But if it is possible to bleed air from the heat exchanger after pressing the spool located under the cap of this device, then this indicates a malfunction of the air conditioner!

The absence of special devices for eliminating plugs on the boiler requires the help of the same devices on pipelines located above the heat source.

REFERENCE! Correctly mounted autonomous and stationary heating systems are equipped with bleed elements at the upper points of the mains and next to all devices that produce or give off heat!

Ideal conditions for exempting from the air plug in the boiler is the possibility of separate overlapping of the heat source circuit with a return pipe and a circulation pump. When turned on, the coolant is pumped, and the periodic opening of the Mayevsky tap or monitoring the operation of the automatic air vent, by pressing the spool, allows you to free the blocked circuit from the plug.

If there is no circulation pump in the closed circuit that cuts off the boiler with the return pipe, then the power source is turned on: gas, electricity, and in the solid fuel, the furnace is ignited. After heating the pipeline "supply" produce periodic opening of the air conditioner. The heat carrier, when heated, will rise from the boiler along the line due to heating and return through the connecting pipe - back to the heat exchanger. This technique requires careful monitoring of temperature, especially when servicing a heat source with non-solid fuel. The movement of the coolant along such a circuit will be very slow and this is taken into account when performing work.

If there is no possibility of shutting off the water circuit of the boiler and there are devices for venting air only in the upper part of the line, it is necessary to drain the coolant and then fill in the entire required volume of water. Before embarking on such global events, it is recommended that all devices (except the boiler) be cut off and, by turning on the pump, bleed off pressure through the nearest air blower on the line until sound or bubbles appear. The lack of result indicates the need for a complete drain of the coolant.

IMPORTANT! The plug may not form in the boiler itself, but inside the pump, which is mounted in the unit body! To get rid of the air that has formed in the impeller cavity, unscrew the central screw of the pump 1-1.5 turns and vice versa, until bubbles appear!

Causes of air entering the heating system

Traffic jams can be caused by various reasons, we will consider them in more detail.

  1. Lack of tightness of joints of mounting joints. Especially often this reason is the initial one when operating systems without pressure. A slight water leak is not visible and borders on possible evaporation. In the place of a loose connection, air is sucked in and accumulates in the free cavity of the line, forming a plug.
  2. Inaccuracy in the design or installation of highways, which entails the creation of unwanted "loops" that inhibit the movement of the coolant, entails the accumulation of air in such circuits.
  3. A low-tech method of filling the system with coolant is also the reason for the appearance of traffic jams. Very fast or top-down directional filling of highways contributes to the formation of air gaps that impede normal operation.
  4. Faulty operation of automatic air vents located on the upper pipelines provokes the creation of traffic jams.
  5. Poor installation of pipes with the formation of wavy lines (relative to the horizon) is a frequent and difficult to determine cause of air. The elimination of this reason requires periodic removal of plugs, and the complete elimination of the repair of a separate section, with the possible installation of additional devices for air exhaust.
  6. Overheating - this reason is characteristic of solid fuel units. When water boils, air bubbles form in the internal cavity and accumulate in the heat exchanger of the boiler.

ATTENTION! It is dangerous to bleed air while the boiler is boiling! There is a high probability of scalding and burns!

What threatens the occurrence of air jams

The presence of air in the highways will not allow radiators to provide the required amount of coolant, which means that the radiators will not produce the required heat and the room temperature will be lower than desired. The noise characteristic of overcoming an air obstacle in the system will not cause irritation in the daytime, but at night it will not let you fall asleep. In places of traffic jams, the internal environment becomes aggressive, which contributes to the active formation of rust.

The most unpleasant thing is overheating. The presence of air in the heat exchanger or heat supply pipe will impede the movement of the coolant, and an increase in temperature may damage the coil or pump.

The ability to bleed air from the boiler or individual sections will allow owners of private houses with autonomous heating to get rid of traffic jams on their own, preventing harmful consequences without resorting to the help of service departments.
