How to clean the drain hole in the refrigerator

A refrigerator is a household appliance capable of serving its owners for many years, if used properly. But, despite the seeming unpretentiousness and reliability, the device may fail. A fairly common malfunction is the accumulation of water at the bottom of the refrigerator.

The cause of the problem is a clogged drain hole. The most obvious problem is during defrosting. This article will discuss what a drainage hole is. Methods and means of cleaning.

Drainage hole in the refrigerator

Drainage is the technical hole at the bottom of the refrigerator compartment. A handset is connected to it. The tube drains water into a special plastic tray located below.

Short description, purpose

In refrigerators with a drip defrosting system, during compressor operation, slight freezing of the inner back wall occurs (in the form of a thin layer of hoarfrost or small ice cubes). During periods of shutdown of the compressor, the ice melts and flows down the back wall in the form of drops down.

Further, the drainage system removes water from the refrigerator to a special tank. A water collection tank is located above the engine. The heat coming from the engine warms up the tray, and the water that has collected in it evaporates naturally.

How to understand that it’s time to clean the drain pipe?

The first sign of a clogged catchment system is a “puddle” of water under the fruit crates. If, after removal, the water has accumulated again, it is time to clean the system! In refrigerators equipped with the No Frost function, ice accumulation at the bottom of the freezer serves as a signal of malfunction of the drainage system.

Where is the drain hole in the refrigerator

The technical hole for water drainage is located in the lower part of the rear wall of the refrigerator.

In refrigerators with the No Frost system, this opening is located behind the rear protective wall of the freezer.

Cleaning Methods

In most cases, you can clean this passage with your own hands. All methods come down to mechanical cleaning.

Tools

For cleaning, you can use:

  • a special stick for cleaning (for some models it is included in the kit);
  • ear sticks;
  • a rubber bulb or a syringe (preferably a ten-cube one);
  • soft wire (preferably copper).

Process description

It is better to start cleaning with a brush or ear sticks. Often the entrance to the drain is clogged with food particles. Using a brush or stick, you can easily clear the passage from the initial blockage. After you can apply a rubber bulb. Put warm water into the syringe, insert the nozzle into the hole, and pressurize the water into the system. The pressure of the water should clean simple blockages along the tube. You can repeat the procedure several times.

If cleaning by douching does not work, the next step is wire cleaning. To avoid damage to the plastic tube, the wire should be soft, not sharp at the end. Using the wire we push the remaining clogging in the tube towards the tray. After the work done, we additionally rinse the system with water from the pear.

Important! All cleaning work is carried out after disconnecting the device from the mains.

What happens if you do not clean the drainage hole?

If the drainage system malfunctions, water will regularly accumulate in the refrigerator. This leads to increased humidity inside the chamber, negatively affects the operation of the device and the quality of the stored products. The risk of developing pathogens, mold, increases. There is an unpleasant odor.

Important! The plastic tray needs periodic cleaning. There are frequent cases of blood residues entering the system and tray. Evaporating, the blood gives off an extremely unpleasant odor.

When should I contact a specialist to clean the refrigerator?

If the refrigerator is equipped with a No Frost system, self-cleaning is undesirable. In models with this system, the drainage hole is hidden behind a special panel. Cleaning requires a qualified technician.

Attention! In 90% of cases, the drainage hole in refrigerators with the No Frost system stops draining water due to freezing of the drainage tube. To fix this problem, just turn off the refrigerator for two days - the ice will gradually melt and the passage will be freed.
