How to hold a microphone

A microphone is a device that converts vibrations from acoustic to electrical. Its competent use makes any public speaking informative and vibrant.

Types of devices

There are different classifications of this device depending on the criterion. According to the type of design, the devices are divided into:

  1. Manual (fixed in the palm of a person)
  2. Desktop (used at conferences, round tables, presentations)
  3. Built-in (consist of a set of headphones + microphone or webcam + microphone)
  4. Lapel (fastened to clothes)

The first type is the most popular. I propose to consider the nuances of handling a manual type as an example of a dynamic cardioid microphone.

REFERENCE! Cardio in Latin means heart. The cardioid orientation of the device allows you to reproduce sound whose source is directly or on the sides of the microphone. Therefore, a drawing is applied to the device in a shape similar to a heart.

Hand position

The shape of the device is perfect for the palm of your hand. The main thing is to take the device so that it was convenient for you. After all, the performance can be long, and the hand should not strain and distract from communication with the audience. Some singers and speakers at the same time actively move on stage or even dance. With the palm of your hand we grab the case in the lower part, without touching the perforated upper part. The fingers should tightly grip the device. It's funny to watch if any finger sticks out to the side.

ATTENTION! We hold the microphone in a working hand. The right-hander is on the right, the left-hander is on the left.

For a good sound, two positions are most suitable. In the first, the microphone is located opposite the face. However, in this position, the speaker’s review is partially closed, and the audience does not see the person completely. Therefore, this position is more suitable for recording, but not for speaking.

In the second position, we hold the microphone body at an angle of 45 degrees at the level of the chin. Breathing will take place above the upper part of the device, the voice will be received as correctly as possible. This is the best position to communicate with the audience.

IMPORTANT! If we turn our head, we turn the microphone at the same time.

Distance to appliance

The distance at which the microphone is located is as important as its position in the hand. The minimum distance is estimated at 2-3 cm, the maximum at 25-30 cm. If the distance is too large, the sound is lost and ceases to be caught by the device. If, on the contrary, the device is very close, extra sounds appear, including breathing and lip movement.

To determine the optimal distance, the following points affect:

  • equipment model and specification
  • speaker direction
  • voice features
  • performance style
  • physiology features

Given these criteria, each speaker will have a different distance between the device and the face. There are universal methods for determining the distance, such as the width of the palm and the width of three fingers. However, it is better to work out, study your sound and find your ideal option. For a professional speaker, a competent approach to the location of the microphone is the key to success
