How to enable side numbers on a laptop

The standard keyboard for a PC or laptop is divided into several parts, one of which is the so-called digital block. Many users who are used to printing numbers through it, and not through the top line of keys, where the numbers are also present, have problems in order to activate this block.

Many users ask this quite reasonable question, referring to the fact that the numbers can be entered through the upper rows, however, not everything is so simple. The fact is that a side block with numbers on a laptop (as is the case with a personal computer) has a more convenient structure for making various calculations. This input device is usually used by those who somehow deal with numbers, since it has a “calculator” type of structure.

How to turn the side keyboard on and off?

In order to turn on the side keyboard, or turn it off, so as not to interfere with the work of random clicks, there are several methods:

  1. Clicking on Num Lock
  2. Using the "Fn + f11" combination
  3. Using an alternate on-screen keyboard

Important! Not all modern laptops have a side number enable key (Num Lock), so you shouldn’t be surprised if you don’t find one on your laptop.

If “Num Lock” is still present, you can usually find it in the upper right part of the “Claudia”. The main function of this key is simple: turning the block of numbers on and off, however, many developers do not miss the opportunity to save “usable space” and attach another function to this key (for example, Scroll Lock).

Simultaneous pressing of the Fn + f11 keys on the keyboard performs the same function as the above key, however, such a combination works most often on those devices where the digital keyboard does not exist at all, and a separate block of number keys is activated or deactivated by pressing this particular combination.

Important! The above combination is not universal, and does not work on all models of laptops.

Some manufacturers have assigned the function of activating / deactivating a block of numbers to the key combinations Fn + F10 or F12. Experimenting with combinations, you should press each key combination two times, in order not to accidentally “screw up” with parameters like turning off the sound or turning off the screen.

As for the use of on-screen "keyboard", this method is extremely simple, and is suitable for those laptops, in which the digital block in which the developers do not provide. By activating in this case the on-screen keyboard, the user will be able to see on the screen an analogue of his own “keyboard” of the device, in which, again, there may not be either a digital block or the Num Lock key. In this case, you will need to go to the application settings, and tick the item on the display of the numeric keypad in them. After that, the on-screen analogue of the “Claudia” should take the form familiar to every PC user.

In order to find the on-screen keyboard, after clicking on the “Start” button, go to the standard programs, and then to the “Special features” item. In the subfolder that opens, you will see the On-Screen Keyboard application, which you need to launch.
