DMZ - what is it in the router?

A person who acquires a router should know its characteristics and features. Of course, the user is given a wide range of wifi-related features. But in the written article we will examine the specifics of one unfamiliar service, namely the DMZ.

DMZ - what is it?

The abbreviation is the full name of the Demilitarized Zone, which means - the demilitarized zone. It contains servers that are available for internal and external networks. Moreover, along with this, the home part is completely closed by means of a network device. Therefore, no change in her work is observed.

In the world of modern technology, most devices are equipped with this function. Thus, in a private network at the equipment all possible ports are open. So it is possible to interface with internal resources, and this does not guarantee security. Most often, DMZ is used to connect the Internet to cameras for video surveillance. Due to this, the path to the unit is organized in a similar local line.

Purpose and use

After the segment is activated, the ports in a specific zone will be accessed at the trusted address. Due to this optimum protection is formed. So in the case of a fight on a publicly available IP, the damage will be reduced to the minimum.

Accordingly, when the user adds the DMZ to the required network node to which the additional device is attached, from the external network it will be displayed as an object. And he, in turn, is directly connected to the World Wide Web. In a situation when other devices are operated on the identical space, their performance will not change.

Attention! To increase security, it is recommended to create a separate network. Such a solution will be especially useful for large firms that value their own information. In addition, to overcome the same goal, it makes sense to use a secondary router.

In any case, the basic functionality will be determined by reliably configured parameters. A discussion of how to properly install them will follow below.

Configuring DMZ on the router

Before proceeding with the main process, it is advisable to contact the provider and make sure that the Internet source receives a “white” IP code. This condition is significant, since if it is not executed, the approach from the global environment will not be implemented.

Reference! For this service you usually have to pay extra, however, there are still manufacturers who provide external IP for free.

Setting a static IP address

In order to achieve the desired result, you must first change the static address on the personal computer, otherwise it will be impossible to add the DMZ. Therefore, for this you need to perform the following manipulations:

  • For a start, it is important to go to the network connections folder. There you need to find the section "connection". With a single click of the right mouse button is to open the "properties".
  • After that, you can correct in the regulation of the Internet protocol TCP / IP indicators. So, knowing the interface code, you have to specify it in the field called "gateway".
  • For the string "subnet mask" you can think up a number yourself.

Reference! The last used number must be 0.

  • A computer number can also be made up of an invented set of numbers.
  • In conclusion, it remains to save the information obtained by pressing the "ok" keys.

Thus, after adjusting the PC, it is necessary to proceed to changes in the values of the router.

Configure the router

Since the function itself is in the disabled state by default, it must be enabled. This will require the following steps, depending on the device model:

  • If you have TP-Link, then you need to open a window with the name “redirection”. Then, in it you can find the DMZ string.
  • In case of using Asus, the tab you need has the appropriate name.
  • D-Link differs from the previous options - the "firewall" section.

  • After you go into the settings, you need to tick the "enable" box.
  • Below you can find the "ID of the DMZ node" field. In each device model, this aspect may be referred to as different variations. For example, it is possible to meet the "address of a visible station." Anyway, it is desirable to enter a static number of existing equipment.
  • Now you can save the changes and start rebooting the router. In this case, the other programs will function in the original mode.

Attention! As a result, everything that previously did not function without the Internet will work.

However, despite the fact that the use of the described function makes it much easier to interact with the programs you need, open access to the PC is provided. It just means nothing about the high probability of network attacks. Therefore, it is highly recommended to additionally install antivirus programs. In addition, today the user can use in this case an alternative - UPNP. In general, its application has the same meaning, but it provides more opportunities.
